How the tithi is calculated
A tithi is one-thirtieth of the lunar month. Each time the Moon moves 12° further ahead of the Sun, a new tithi begins: 15 tithis of the waxing (Shukla) fortnight end with Purnima and 15 of the waning (Krishna) fortnight end with Amavasya.
Because the Moon’s speed changes, a tithi lasts anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours. So a tithi can span two sunrises (vriddhi) or fall between two sunrises and be skipped (kshaya).

Why can a tithi start in the middle of the day?
A tithi is defined by the angle between the Moon and the Sun, not by the clock, so it can begin and end at any hour. The tithi prevailing at sunrise gives its name to the whole day.
What is the difference between amanta and purnimanta months?
In the amanta system (used in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat) a lunar month ends on Amavasya; in the purnimanta system (most of North India) it ends on Purnima. The tithi is the same — only the month name in the Krishna paksha differs.
