What is Bhoomi Pooja?

Before the earth is dug, tradition asks the family to honour Bhoomi Devi and the Vastu Purusha and to cleanse the plot of past influences. The first digging and the foundation stones (shila nyasam) are placed at the muhurtham, usually in the north-east (eeshanya) corner.

The ceremony is done for houses, apartments, commercial buildings and farm structures alike, and the builder, engineer and workers are often included in the blessings.
