How it is calculated
The positions of the Sun, the Moon and the rising point of the ecliptic are calculated for your birth moment and place, then converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the standard of the Indian government’s Rashtriya Panchang and most Indian astrologers.
Nakshatra, rashi and lagna agree with Swiss Ephemeris (the library most horoscope software uses) to about an arcsecond. A birth-time error matters most for the lagna, which moves about one degree every four minutes.

Why do I need the birth time and place?
The Moon moves through a whole nakshatra in about a day and the lagna changes every two hours or so, so both the time and the place (which sets local time and the horizon) change the result.
I don’t know my exact birth time. What can I do?
Nakshatra and rashi need only an approximate time unless the Moon was changing sign or star that day. The lagna needs an accurate time — if you are unsure, a pandit or astrologer can help with birth-time rectification.
Why is my Vedic rashi different from my Western zodiac sign?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to the seasons; Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to the stars. The two differ by the ayanamsa (about 24° today), so most people’s sign moves back by one.
Which ayanamsa is used?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard adopted by the Indian government’s calendar reform committee and used by most Indian panchangs and astrologers.
