Not every event needs a full muhurat from a pandit. For everyday beginnings — a purchase, a journey, a meeting — families use a few simple daily muhurats.
Choghadiya
Popular in Gujarat and North India, Choghadiya divides the day (sunrise to sunset) and the night into eight parts each:
- Amrit — the best; Shubh and Labh — auspicious.
- Char — neutral, good for travel.
- Rog, Kaal, Udveg — avoided for beginnings.

Abhijit Muhurat
The Abhijit Muhurat is the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of the day — around local noon. It is considered strong enough to overcome many faults and is widely used when no other muhurat is available. Many traditions do not use it on Wednesdays. Find it with the Abhijit Muhurat calculator.
Brahma Muhurta
Brahma Muhurta is the sacred pre-dawn time, about 1½ hours before sunrise — ideal for meditation, japa and study. See the Brahma Muhurta calculator.
Times to avoid
- Rahu Kalam — avoided for new beginnings.
- Yamagandam and Gulika Kalam.
- Dur Muhurat and Varjyam, listed in the full panchang.
For big occasions
Weddings, Griha Pravesh, upanayanam and naming ceremonies need a muhurat based on the family’s nakshatras, lagna and the month — ask a pandit.
