What is a vivah (marriage) muhurat?
A vivah muhurat is the window in which the main marriage rites — kanyadaan, the mangalsutra and the saptapadi — are performed. Families then fix the exact lagna inside it from the couple’s horoscopes.

How a vivah date is chosen
- Nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati — avoiding the gandanta quarters where Ashlesha meets Magha, Jyeshtha meets Mula and Revati meets Ashwini.
- No Amavasya or Krishna Chaturdashi, no Vishti (Bhadra) karana and none of the nine harsh yogas (Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha, Vaidhriti).
- No marriages during Chaturmas (Devshayani to Devutthana Ekadashi), Kharmas (the Sun in Dhanu or Meena), an adhika masa, on Sankranti, or while Guru or Shukra is set.
- These are panchang shuddhi dates. The lagna (rising sign) for the couple is chosen by the pandit within the window.

- Shortlist two or three dates and have both horoscopes matched for the lagna.
- Halls and pandits book early on the most popular dates — Devutthana week, Basant Panchami and Akshaya Tritiya season.
- For South Indian weddings the muhurtham is often in the early morning window of the same date.
