What is a upanayanam (janeu) muhurat?
Upanayanam is the sacred-thread ceremony, when a boy receives the yajnopavita and the Gayatri mantra and begins Vedic study.

How a upanayanam date is chosen
- Solar month: Makara to Mithuna (Uttarayana), mid-January to mid-July.
- Tithi: Shukla Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Dwadashi, or Krishna Dwitiya, Tritiya or Panchami.
- Weekday: not Tuesday or Saturday; daytime only.
- Not during Chaturmas, while Guru or Shukra is set, in an adhika masa, on Sankranti or an eclipse day.

- Traditionally in the 5th or 8th year for Brahmins, counted from conception or birth.
- Many families combine upanayanam with a Ganapathi homam the day before.
- Check Rahu Kalam and the day’s panchang for your city before the exact time.

How are these upanayanam dates calculated?
From the positions of the Sun and Moon for each day (Lahiri ayanamsa), applying the rules of Muhurta Chintamani: solar month: makara to mithuna (uttarayana), mid-january to mid-july, and the other conditions listed on this page. Our calculation uses the same engine as our panchang, which matches Drik Panchang to the minute.
Do the timings change with my city?
Slightly. A muhurat starts or ends when the tithi or nakshatra changes, which happens at the same moment everywhere, or at sunrise, which differs by city. Times here are IST for New Delhi; check the sunrise for your city on our Panchang and your pandit will confirm.
