What is a namkaran muhurat?
Namkaran is the naming ceremony, traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth. When that day cannot be kept, families pick a muhurat from this list.

How a namkaran date is chosen
- Nakshatra: fixed and movable stars — Rohini, the three Uttaras, Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha — and Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati.
- Tithi: Pratipada, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi or Trayodashi.
- Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; daytime, ideally before noon.
- Not on Sankranti or an eclipse day. Unlike marriage, Chaturmas and Guru / Shukra asta do not stop a naming ceremony.

How are these namkaran dates calculated?
From the positions of the Sun and Moon for each day (Lahiri ayanamsa), applying the rules of Muhurta Chintamani: nakshatra: fixed and movable stars — rohini, the three uttaras, punarvasu, swati, shravana, dhanishtha, shatabhisha — and ashwini, mrigashira, pushya, hasta, chitra, anuradha and revati, and the other conditions listed on this page. Our calculation uses the same engine as our panchang, which matches Drik Panchang to the minute.
Do the timings change with my city?
Slightly. A muhurat starts or ends when the tithi or nakshatra changes, which happens at the same moment everywhere, or at sunrise, which differs by city. Times here are IST for New Delhi; check the sunrise for your city on our Panchang and your pandit will confirm.
Is a date enough, or do I need a lagna too?
These are panchang shuddhi dates — the day and window are clean. For marriage, griha pravesh and upanayanam the pandit also picks a lagna (rising sign) inside the window that suits the family’s horoscopes.
