What is a mundan muhurat?
Mundan (Chudakarana) is the child’s first head-shave, one of the sixteen samskaras, usually in the first, third or fifth year for a boy and an even year for a girl.

How a mundan date is chosen
- Nakshatra: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha or Revati.
- Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi of either paksha.
- Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; daytime only.
- Solar month: Makara, Kumbha, Mesha, Vrishabha or Mithuna (mid-January to mid-July, except Meena).
- Not while Guru or Shukra is set, in an adhika masa, on Sankranti or an eclipse day.

Slightly. A muhurat starts or ends when the tithi or nakshatra changes, which happens at the same moment everywhere, or at sunrise, which differs by city. Times here are IST for New Delhi; check the sunrise for your city on our Panchang and your pandit will confirm.
