What is a griha pravesh muhurat?
Griha Pravesh is the first formal entry into a new home, with Ganapathi puja, Vastu shanti and the boiling of milk. Families choose a muhurat so the house begins its life in an auspicious hour.
Also searched as: gruhapravesam muhurtham, house warming muhurat, new house entry dates.
How a griha pravesh date is chosen
- Nakshatra: one of the fixed or gentle stars — Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati.
- Tithi: Shukla Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi or Trayodashi, or Krishna Pratipada to Ekadashi except Chaturthi, Shashthi, Ashtami and Navami.
- Weekday: not Sunday or Tuesday.
- Lunar month: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are best; Kartika and Margashirsha are also used. Chaitra, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Pausha are avoided.
- No dates while Guru (Jupiter) or Shukra (Venus) is set, or in an adhika masa.
Before you fix the date
- Enter with a kalash of water, the family deity’s photo and a lamp; boil milk in the kitchen first.
- Book the pandit for Ganapathi puja, Vastu shanti and Navagraha puja in the same muhurat.
- If the window is at night, many families do the entry then and the homam next morning.
- Check Rahu Kalam and the day’s panchang for your city before the exact time.
Frequently asked questions
How many griha pravesh muhurats are there in 2026?
36 days, the most in December 2026. 4 months have none.
How are these griha pravesh dates calculated?
From the positions of the Sun and Moon for each day (Lahiri ayanamsa), applying the rules of Muhurta Chintamani: nakshatra: one of the fixed or gentle stars — rohini, mrigashira, uttara phalguni, chitra, anuradha, uttara ashadha, uttara bhadrapada or revati, and the other conditions listed on this page. Our dates match the published Drik Panchang list for New Delhi date for date on our test months.
Do the timings change with my city?
Slightly. A muhurat starts or ends when the tithi or nakshatra changes, which happens at the same moment everywhere, or at sunrise, which differs by city. Times here are IST for New Delhi; check the sunrise for your city on our Panchang and your pandit will confirm.
Is a date enough, or do I need a lagna too?
These are panchang shuddhi dates — the day and window are clean. For marriage, griha pravesh and upanayanam the pandit also picks a lagna (rising sign) inside the window that suits the family’s horoscopes.
Can Rutviju send a pandit for Griha Pravesh Pooja on the muhurat?
