About this chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn of forty chaupais, framed by dohas, written in Awadhi by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century. It praises Hanuman’s strength, wisdom and devotion to Rama, and is among the most widely recited prayers in India.
Hanuman Chalisa
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
శ్రీగురు చరన సరోజ రజ, నిజ మను ముకురు సుధారి।

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल बुधि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
బుద్ధిహీన తను జానికే, సుమిరౌం పవన-కుమార।
బల బుధి బిద్యా దేహు మోహిం, హరహు కలేస బికార॥Buddhiheen tanu janike, sumiraun Pavan-kumar,
Bal buddhi bidya dehu mohin, harahu kalesa bikar.Knowing myself to be lacking in wisdom, I remember you, son of the Wind; grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and faults.

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी। कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा। कानन कुंडल कुंचित केसा॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
మహాబీర బిక్రమ బజరంగీ। కుమతి నివార సుమతి కే సంగీ॥
కంచన బరన బిరాజ సుబేసా। కానన కుండల కుంచిత కేసా॥Mahabir bikram Bajrangi, kumati nivar sumati ke sangi,
Kanchan baran biraj subesa, kanan kundal kunchit kesa.Great hero, mighty one with a body like a thunderbolt, you dispel bad thoughts and keep company with the good. Golden-hued and finely dressed, you wear earrings, and your hair is curly.
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै। काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन। तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
హాథ బజ్ర ఔ ధ్వజా బిరాజై। కాఁధే మూఁజ జనేఊ సాజై॥
సంకర సువన కేసరీనందన। తేజ ప్రతాప మహా జగ బందన॥Hath bajra au dhvaja birajai, kandhe moonj janeu sajai,
Sankar suvan Kesari-nandan, tej pratap maha jag bandan.A thunderbolt and a banner shine in your hands, and a sacred thread of munja grass adorns your shoulder. Incarnation of Shiva and son of Kesari, your radiance and glory are worshipped by the world.
बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर। राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया। राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
బిద్యావాన గునీ అతి చాతుర। రామ కాజ కరిబే కో ఆతుర॥
ప్రభు చరిత్ర సునిబే కో రసియా। రామ లఖన సీతా మన బసియా॥Bidyavan guni ati chatur, Ram kaj karibe ko atur,
Prabhu charitra sunibe ko rasiya, Ram Lakhan Sita man basiya.Learned, virtuous and very wise, you are always eager to do Rama’s work. You delight in hearing the Lord’s story, and Rama, Lakshmana and Sita dwell in your heart.
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा। बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे। रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
సూక్ష్మ రూప ధరి సియహిం దిఖావా। బికట రూప ధరి లంక జరావా॥
భీమ రూప ధరి అసుర సఁహారే। రామచంద్ర కే కాజ సఁవారే॥Sukshma roop dhari Siyahin dikhava, bikat roop dhari Lank jarava,
Bheem roop dhari asur sanhare, Ramchandra ke kaj sanvare.Taking a tiny form you appeared before Sita; taking a fearsome form you burnt Lanka. In a mighty form you destroyed the demons and accomplished Rama’s work.
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये। श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई। तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
లాయ సజీవన లఖన జియాయే। శ్రీరఘుబీర హరషి ఉర లాయే॥
రఘుపతి కీన్హీ బహుత బడ఼ాఈ। తుమ మమ ప్రియ భరతహి సమ భాఈ॥Laye sajivan Lakhan jiyaye, Shri Raghubir harashi ur laye,
Raghupati kinhi bahut badai, tum mam priya Bharatahi sam bhai.You brought the life-giving herb and revived Lakshmana; Rama embraced you with joy. He praised you greatly: “You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.”
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं। अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा। नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
సహస బదన తుమ్హరో జస గావైం। అస కహి శ్రీపతి కంఠ లగావైం॥
సనకాదిక బ్రహ్మాది మునీసా। నారద సారద సహిత అహీసా॥Sahas badan tumharo jas gavain, as kahi Shripati kanth lagavain,
Sanakadik Brahmadi munisa, Narad Sarad sahit Ahisa.“May the thousand-headed serpent sing your glory,” said Rama, embracing you. Sanaka and the sages, Brahma and the gods, Narada, Saraswati and the king of serpents —
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते। कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा। राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
జమ కుబేర దిగపాల జహాఁ తే। కబి కోబిద కహి సకే కహాఁ తే॥
తుమ ఉపకార సుగ్రీవహిం కీన్హా। రామ మిలాయ రాజ పద దీన్హా॥Jam Kuber Digpal jahan te, kabi kobid kahi sake kahan te,
Tum upkar Sugreevahin kinha, Ram milaye raj pad dinha.— Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions, and poets and scholars — none can fully describe your glory. You helped Sugriva, bringing him to Rama, who restored his kingdom.
तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषन माना। लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना॥
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू। लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
తుమ్హరో మంత్ర బిభీషన మానా। లంకేస్వర భఏ సబ జగ జానా॥
జుగ సహస్ర జోజన పర భానూ। లీల్యో తాహి మధుర ఫల జానూ॥Tumharo mantra Bibheeshan mana, Lankeshwar bhaye sab jag jana,
Jug sahasra jojan par Bhanu, leelyo tahi madhur phal janu.Vibhishana followed your counsel and became king of Lanka, as the world knows. The Sun, thousands of yojanas away, you swallowed, thinking it a sweet fruit.
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं। जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते। सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
ప్రభు ముద్రికా మేలి ముఖ మాహీం। జలధి లాఁఘి గయే అచరజ నాహీం॥
దుర్గమ కాజ జగత కే జేతే। సుగమ అనుగ్రహ తుమ్హరే తేతే॥Prabhu mudrika meli mukh mahin, jaladhi langhi gaye achraj nahin,
Durgam kaj jagat ke jete, sugam anugraha tumhare tete.Holding the Lord’s ring in your mouth, you leapt across the ocean — no wonder in that. Every difficult task in the world becomes easy by your grace.
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे। होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना। तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
రామ దుఆరే తుమ రఖవారే। హోత న ఆజ్ఞా బిను పైసారే॥
సబ సుఖ లహై తుమ్హారీ సరనా। తుమ రచ్ఛక కాహూ కో డర నా॥Ram duare tum rakhvare, hot na agya binu paisare,
Sab sukh lahai tumhari sarna, tum rakshak kahu ko dar na.You guard Rama’s door; no one enters without your leave. Those who take refuge in you find every happiness; with you as protector, there is nothing to fear.
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै। तीनों लोक हाँक तें काँपै॥
भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै। महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
ఆపన తేజ సమ్హారో ఆపై। తీనోం లోక హాఁక తేం కాఁపై॥
భూత పిసాచ నికట నహిం ఆవై। మహాబీర జబ నామ సునావై॥Aapan tej samharo aapai, teenon lok hank te kanpai,
Bhoot pisach nikat nahin aavai, Mahabir jab naam sunavai.Only you can contain your own power; the three worlds tremble at your roar. Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near when your name, Mahavir, is spoken.
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा। जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥
संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै। मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
నాసై రోగ హరై సబ పీరా। జపత నిరంతర హనుమత బీరా॥
సంకట తేం హనుమాన ఛుడ఼ావై। మన క్రమ బచన ధ్యాన జో లావై॥Nasai rog harai sab peera, japat nirantar Hanumat beera,
Sankat te Hanuman chhudavai, man kram bachan dhyan jo lavai.Disease is destroyed and all pain removed by constantly chanting the name of brave Hanuman. Hanuman frees from trouble those who remember him in thought, deed and word.
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा। तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै। सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
సబ పర రామ తపస్వీ రాజా। తిన కే కాజ సకల తుమ సాజా॥
ఔర మనోరథ జో కోఈ లావై। సోఈ అమిత జీవన ఫల పావై॥Sab par Ram tapasvi raja, tin ke kaj sakal tum saja,
Aur manorath jo koi lavai, soi amit jeevan phal pavai.Rama, the ascetic king, is supreme over all, and you accomplished all his work. Whoever comes to you with any wish receives the boundless fruit of life.
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा। है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे। असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
చారోం జుగ పరతాప తుమ్హారా। హై పరసిద్ధ జగత ఉజియారా॥
సాధు సంత కే తుమ రఖవారే। అసుర నికందన రామ దులారే॥Charon jug partap tumhara, hai parsiddh jagat ujiyara,
Sadhu sant ke tum rakhvare, asur nikandan Ram dulare.Your glory shines through all four ages and lights up the world. You are the protector of saints and sages, destroyer of demons, beloved of Rama.
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता। अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा। सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
అష్ట సిద్ధి నౌ నిధి కే దాతా। అస బర దీన జానకీ మాతా॥
రామ రసాయన తుమ్హరే పాసా। సదా రహో రఘుపతి కే దాసా॥Ashta siddhi nau nidhi ke data, as bar deen Janaki mata,
Ram rasayan tumhare pasa, sada raho Raghupati ke dasa.Mother Sita blessed you to be the giver of the eight powers and the nine treasures. You hold the elixir of devotion to Rama; may you always remain his servant.
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै। जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
अंत काल रघुबर पुर जाई। जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
తుమ్హరే భజన రామ కో పావై। జనమ జనమ కే దుఖ బిసరావై॥
అంత కాల రఘుబర పుర జాఈ। జహాఁ జన్మ హరి-భక్త కహాఈ॥Tumhare bhajan Ram ko pavai, janam janam ke dukh bisravai,
Ant kaal Raghubar pur jai, jahan janma Hari-bhakt kahai.Through devotion to you one reaches Rama and forgets the sorrows of many lives. At the end one goes to Rama’s abode, and wherever one is born is known as a devotee of Hari.
और देवता चित्त न धरई। हनुमत सेइ सर्ब सुख करई॥
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा। जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
ఔర దేవతా చిత్త న ధరఈ। హనుమత సేఇ సర్బ సుఖ కరఈ॥
సంకట కటై మిటై సబ పీరా। జో సుమిరై హనుమత బలబీరా॥Aur devata chitt na dharai, Hanumat sei sarb sukh karai,
Sankat katai mitai sab peera, jo sumirai Hanumat balbeera.Even without holding other deities in mind, serving Hanuman brings every happiness. Troubles end and all pain vanishes for whoever remembers mighty Hanuman.
जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाईं। कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई। छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
జై జై జై హనుమాన గోసాఈం। కృపా కరహు గురుదేవ కీ నాఈం॥
జో సత బార పాఠ కర కోఈ। ఛూటహి బంది మహా సుఖ హోఈ॥Jai jai jai Hanuman Gosain, kripa karahu Gurudev ki nain,
Jo sat bar path kar koi, chhootahi bandi maha sukh hoi.Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman — be gracious to me as my Guru. Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and attains great happiness.
जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा। होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा। कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
జో యహ పఢ఼ై హనుమాన చాలీసా। హోయ సిద్ధి సాఖీ గౌరీసా॥
తులసీదాస సదా హరి చేరా। కీజై నాథ హృదయ మహఁ డేరా॥Jo yah padhai Hanuman Chalisa, hoy siddhi sakhi Gaurisa,
Tulsidas sada Hari chera, keejai nath hriday mahan dera.Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains success — Shiva is the witness. Tulsidas, ever the servant of Hari, prays: Lord, make your home in my heart.
पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप।
राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥తెలుగు లిపిలో
పవనతనయ సంకట హరన, మంగల మూరతి రూప।
రామ లఖన సీతా సహిత, హృదయ బసహు సుర భూప॥Pavantanay sankat haran, mangal moorati roop,
Ram Lakhan Sita sahit, hriday basahu sur bhoop.Son of the Wind, remover of troubles, embodiment of auspiciousness — dwell in my heart together with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, O king of the gods.
When to recite
Daily, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, and whenever facing fear or difficulty.

How to recite it
Recite after bathing, before an image of Hanuman or Rama, with a lamp lit. Many recite it once daily, seven times on Tuesdays and Saturdays, or a hundred times over a period as a vow.
The Chalisa is traditionally preceded by the two opening dohas and followed by the closing doha, as given here.
