Why is Ugadi observed?
Religious
The beginning of a new samvatsara (year) of the 60-year cycle; Brahma began creation on this day.
Ugadi pachadi
Neem flowers (bitter), jaggery (sweet), tamarind (sour), raw mango (tangy), salt and pepper or chilli (spicy) — six tastes for the joys and sorrows of the coming year, accepted alike.
Panchanga shravanam
Hearing the new panchangam — the year’s rainfall, harvests and each rashi’s fortunes — is a Telugu Ugadi tradition in homes and temples.
Ugadi katha
Characters: Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu
At the end of the cosmic night, Vishnu awakened Brahma from the lotus that grew from his navel and asked him to create the worlds anew.
Brahma began creation on the first day of the bright half of Chaitra, and with it time began to be counted — days, months and years. That is why the year starts on this day, and why it is called Yugadi, the beginning of an age.
