What is Durga Pooja?
Durga Pooja is the worship of Goddess Durga, who destroyed the demon Mahishasura, for protection, strength and victory of good over evil. At home it is performed during Navaratri and on Durgashtami, or whenever a family seeks the goddess’s protection.
The goddess is invoked in a kalasham (ghatasthapana) and worshipped with the sixteen offerings, the Durga Saptashati or her 108 names, and kumkum archana. On Ashtami and Navami many families perform kanya (kumari) pooja, honouring young girls as the goddess.
