Vastu Shanti is a puja to Vastu Purusha, the deity of dwellings, and the guardians of the directions. It seeks harmony between the building and the natural forces around it, and is believed to reduce the effects of faults (doshas) in a structure.
When is it performed?
- Before moving into a new house or office — usually with the Griha Pravesh.
- After major renovations or structural changes.
- When moving into a house built by someone else or bought second-hand.
- When the family faces repeated troubles and wishes to seek peace in the home.
What happens in the puja
- Ganapati puja, Punyahavachanam (purification) and sankalpa.
- Vastu mandala — a diagram of 64 or 81 squares is drawn and the deities of each square are invoked.
- Worship of Vastu Purusha and the eight guardians of directions (Ashta Dikpalakas).
- Vastu homam with offerings into the sacred fire.
- Bali (offerings) in the directions and sprinkling of sanctified water through the house.
Main door puja
In Telugu homes the Vasakal (Dwarabandhanam) puja of the main door frame is also common — the threshold is worshipped with turmeric, kumkum and flowers as the entry of Lakshmi.
A note on expectations
Vastu Shanti is a spiritual practice, not an engineering fix. Good ventilation, light and a clean, uncluttered home matter as much as any ritual.
