Satyanarayana Puja is one of the most loved household pujas in India. Families perform it to give thanks, before or after a new beginning — a housewarming, a wedding, a new job — or simply on a Purnima for peace and prosperity. It worships Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayana, the Lord of Truth.
When to perform it
Purnima (the full-moon day), Ekadashi and Sankranti are traditional choices, as is any day chosen for an auspicious start. The puja is usually done in the evening. Use the Purnima calculator to find the next Purnima for your city, or ask your pandit for a muhurat.

The order of the puja
- Ganapati puja — every puja begins by worshipping Ganesha to remove obstacles.
- Sankalpa — the family states the puja’s purpose with their names, gotra and the day.
- Kalash puja and Navagraha puja — invoking the deities and the nine planets.
- Satyanarayana puja — shodashopachara (sixteen offerings): invocation, abhishekam with panchamrit, clothes, sandal, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedyam.
- Katha — the five chapters of the Satyanarayana katha are read aloud.
- Aarti and prasad — the family offers aarti and shares the prasad with everyone present.
The katha in brief
The five chapters tell how Lord Vishnu revealed the vrat to Narada, and of a poor Brahmin, a woodcutter, a merchant and King Tungadhvaja whose lives changed through keeping the vrat — and suffered when they neglected the prasad or their promise. The message is simple: truthfulness, gratitude and keeping one’s word.
Tips for families
- Fast until the puja if you can, and break it with the prasad.
- Invite neighbours and relatives — sharing the prasad is part of the vrat.
- If you are unsure of the mantras, a pandit can perform it at your home or on a live video call.
