What is Satyanarayana Pooja?
Satyanarayana Pooja (Satyanarayana Vratham) is the worship of Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayana, the embodiment of truth, described in the Skanda Purana. Families perform it to give thanks and seek blessings — after a housewarming or wedding, on birthdays and new jobs, and on Purnima (full moon).
The vratham is one of the most widely performed home poojas in India because it needs no special muhurtham: it can be done on any auspicious day, and traditionally in the evening. Its five chapters (adhyayas) tell how devotees who kept the vow were blessed and how those who neglected it suffered, and listening to the katha is itself part of the pooja.
