What is Upanayanam?
Upanayanam is the sacred thread ceremony in which a boy receives the yajnopavitam and the Gayatri mantra from his father, beginning his life as a student (brahmacharya) of the Vedas.
Upanayanam in Nandyal
Telugu families perform Upanayanam with Udakashanti the previous day and often combine it with the Vatuvu’s Kashi yatra.
Pandits follow the Telugu Smarta and Vaishnava traditions: mantras are chanted in Sanskrit, and the sankalpam and explanations are given in Telugu. Muhurthams follow the Telugu panchangam (Chandramana calendar).

Upanayanam: steps, samagri and best time
Upanayanam takes 4 to 5 hours (one day; two days with Udakashanti) with 2 to 3 pandits. The main samagri is yajnopavitam (sacred threads), deer skin piece and danda (palasha staff), munja grass belt (mekhala) and new dhoti and angavastram for the boy; your pandit shares the full list after booking. It is usually performed between ages 7 and 16, on a muhurtham.
