What is Namakaranam?
Namakaranam is the naming ceremony of a newborn — usually on the 11th, 12th or 21st day — in which the father whispers the chosen name in the baby’s right ear after Punyahavachanam and prayers for a long, healthy life.
Namakaranam in Suryapet
Telugu families celebrate Barasala on the 21st day, placing the baby in the uyyala (cradle) and writing the name on rice in a plate.
Pandits follow the Telugu Smarta and Vaishnava traditions: mantras are chanted in Sanskrit, and the sankalpam and explanations are given in Telugu. Muhurthams follow the Telugu panchangam (Chandramana calendar).
